Plants and pets: what helps
- Start big: floor plants are harder to knock over than small ones on low tables
- Keep hanging and trailing plants out of reach of cats who like to bat at leaves
- Use a stone top dressing so dogs don’t dig in the soil
- Tell us about your pets in the Light Check and we’ll show only safe plants
- Even non-toxic plants can upset a stomach if a pet eats a lot
Frequently asked questions
Are these plants completely safe?
They are listed as non-toxic to dogs and cats by the ASPCA. Non-toxic is not the same as edible: a pet that eats a lot of any plant can get an upset stomach.
What if my pet chews a plant that isn’t on this list?
Call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (a consultation fee may apply). Every plant page shows whether it is toxic to pets.
Can I rent pet-safe plants?
Yes. Kentia, Rhapis, Parlor palm, Ponytail palm, Money tree and Cast iron plant are available to rent, with or without care.
Plants outside this collection are marked “Toxic to pets if chewed” on their pages.
